| L. Rylene Stein of Valrico, Florida, was appointed principal of the Charter School effective July 12, 2005. She is enthusiastic about the Charter School, stating, "I want to make things real for the students and teachers; I consider myself a leader of learning." Ms.
Stein's professional background encompasses 24 years of
experience in education. Ms. Stein began her career
as an art and gifted education teacher. She has
taught in various educational settings in Indiana, Ohio,
Illinois, and Florida. Her various tenures grant
her experience in diversity and knowledge in dealing with
different types of student populations. Her most
recent position was that of Magnet Coordinator for Daughtrey
Preparatory School of Arts and Science in the Manatee
County School District and, previous to that, she worked
for Hillsborough County at Muller Elementary as an ESE
specialist.
Ms. Stein is credited for making significant
progress at her former administrative post with Chatham
and Lafayette Elementary Schools in the Cloverleaf district
of Lodi, Ohio. While concurrently serving as principal
to both schools, Ms. Stein implemented a program to increase
student test scores. The Cloverleaf schools under
her leadership showed a "concerted and successful
effort to focus on improving student achievement,"
according to Bobbi Armstrong, Assistant Superintendent
of Cloverleaf Local Schools. The schools led by
Ms. Stein made considerable gains on their grade card,
raising proficiency scores at both the fourth and sixth
grade levels.
Dr. Colleen Kennedy, Dean of the College of Education
and Vice-President of the Charter School, is pleased that the school is benefitting from Ms. Stein's experience
and expertise. "The diversity of her background,
her leadership style, and her innovative approach to education
warrants a successful combination with the students and
staff of the Charter School," states Dr. Kennedy.
