Graduate with Two Degrees from College of Education is Named Dean at CSU

Mildred Murray-Ward of California Lutheran University (CLU), a private university in Southern California, has been named Dean of the College of Education at California State University in Stanislaus.  A native of Pennsylvania, she holds two degrees from the USF College of Education -- a Master's in Elementary Education and a Ph.D. in Educational Measurement and Research.

Murray-Ward has worked in education since 1970.  Active nationally in her profession, Murray-Ward went to Slovakia in 1993 as a Fulbright Scholar.  She worked for public school districts in Florida and Los Angeles as an administrator, researcher and program evaluator and taught elementary school for four years in Tampa, Florida.  Murray-Ward formerly served as Associate Dean of the School of Education and as a professor of education at CLU, where she has been a faculty member for 20 years.  She has also held the positions of director of the doctoral program in Educational Leadership, chairwoman of the Advanced Studies department, and acting dean of the School of Education.

In her current job as Assistant Provost for Assessment at CLU, she is responsible for a university assessment plan that aims to determine whether the institution is preparing students to meet goals and outcomes the colleges sets for them.

Commenting on her appointment at California State University-Stanislaus which began in late July 2005, Murray-Ward said she was looking forward to such an exciting opportunity.  She added that while there are lots of partnerships already in place at Stanislaus State, such as with school districts throughout the region, she plans to enhance those and perhaps develop more partnerships with help from faculty and staff.  "I'm going to facilitate and help develop things," she said, "to be a liaison and a cheerleader."
