Mellissa Alonso Named Hillsborough County 2004-2005 Teacher of the Year

   

Alonso was selected as Hillsborough County Schools 2004-05 Teacher of the Year. Chosen from over 200 nominees, Mellissa is a 1992 College of Education Magna Cum Laude graduate with a major in Elementary Education and has been teaching at Valrico Elementary School for three years. She has spent 12 years teaching in Florida schools, the last two as the Title I Reading Resource Teacher at Valrico. As a district trainer, a national staff developer, and a published author, Mellissa shares her skills with teachers at the district, state and national levels. Alonso also worked with an internationally recognized reading expert on a videotape project for teaching excellence in reading. She was awarded the Celebrate Literacy Award for Exemplary Service by the Hillsborough County Classroom International Reading Association. Alonso co-authored the district Reading Coach Project, trains reading tutors, and serves on many district committees. She also served on the editorial board for the Florida Reading Quarterly.
