Draft COEDU Compact Plan: Message to Faculty

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to invite you to comment on the DRAFT College of Education (COEDU) Compact Plan.  Recall that we began the Compact Planning process in the fall (see: http://www.coedu.usf.edu/main/administration/CompactPlanProcess.html).  All departments and centers submitted their compact plans, chairs and asst/assoc deans and I reviewed them, then the associate deans and I developed the four (4) draft COEDU compact plans -- the links for which are provided below in pdf format.

DRAFT INITIATIVES
#1. Research and Innovation
#2 Promoting Excellence in Grad and Undergrad Programs
#3 e-Learning Initiative
#4 Expanding Local and Global Engagement

As you read the draft COEDU compact plan for the Tampa campus, please keep the following in mind.  Each initiative addresses one or more of the four (4) benchmark areas, including:

Feedback desired (please give your Chair/Director your thoughts on the following by April 20) :

  • Will the proposed actions help us to achieve the desired outcomes?  If not, how could they be improved?

  • Are there other actions the COEDU could take that are more likely to help us achieve the desired outcomes?  (If so, please identify them).

  • Any other comments you’d like to make, including editorial, are most welcome!

Open Forums – We will also schedule three one-hour open forums where Harold Keller and I will meet with interested faculty to receive your input on these proposed initiatives (dates to follow).

Keep in Mind:

We are sending this to you in draft form.  It is far from a finished document and we seek your input! Also, please be advised that costs have not yet been associated with actions for two reasons.  First, the budget for next year is unknown until after the Legislature acts and the institutions receive their funding for next year.  Second, a significant portion of the projected costs include new faculty positions which cannot yet be determined because Chairs are consulting with faculty now re: their needs in preparation for submitting their position requests to me.

Despite Florida’s difficult budget situation, we can still make progress using one-time funds for some of these proposed activities.  Also, the e-learning initiative is proposed to be funded from the fees Continuing Education receives for delivering online courses.  Further, not all of these actions require additional funding.  I know it is difficult to plan when we don’t know whether we will receive many or any new positions next year; however, had we taken that attitude last year we wouldn’t have received authorization for the 7 new positions we searched for this year.  Nothing ventured………nothing gained!

Chairs/Directors will have until April 22 to compile the feedback they receive from you.  I can then review the feedback and advise you at the Spring Faculty Meeting (April 24) regarding the status of our draft Compact Plan at that time; make needed revisions; and submit it to the Provost by the May 1 deadline date.

In closing, thank you for participating in the compact planning process.  I hope you see yourself, your department or center reflected in the COEDU draft Compact Plan.

Thanks!
