Case Study

 

Description: Students will create a case study on an English language learner who is in an ESOL program. The case study will document and analyze issues relevant to the course objectives, particularly the interaction between language development and literacy within a sociocultural context.  The case study will include:

 

  • Data collection and analysis of the data which reflects an understanding of the student’s cultural, linguistic and academic development and learning (AP7);
  • Analysis and solutions which reflect an understanding of the learning environments of the student--how those learning environments interact with the student’s cultural and academic background, and how the learning environment might better facilitate student growth in language and literacy (AP9); and
  • The use of technology to organize and disseminate the case study (AP12).

 

Criterion #1: Human Development and Learning

 

Description: Students will collect data and provide an analysis of the data based on an understanding of human development and learning with a focus on literacy and second language development. (AP7)

 

Score

Description

1=Poor

Data collection and analysis do not reflect an understanding of how students develop second language and literacy in an academic environment.

2=Limited

Data collection and analysis are minimal and reflect little understanding of how students develop second language and literacy in an academic environment.

3=Adequate

Data collection and analysis reflect a basic understanding of how students develop second language and literacy in an academic environment.

4=Proficient

Data collection and analysis reflect a clear understanding of how students develop second language and literacy in an academic environment and include some support from course materials.

5=Outstanding

Data collection and analysis reflect an in-depth understanding of how students develop second language and literacy in an academic environment, provide numerous relevant examples and support from course materials.

 

Criterion #2: Learning Environments

 

Description:  Students will provide an analysis and solutions which reflect an understanding of the student’s learning environments and their interaction with the student’s cultural, academic and linguistic backgrounds. (AP9)

Description

1=Poor

Analysis and solutions do not reflect an understanding of the student’s learning environments and their interaction with the student’s cultural, academic and linguistic backgrounds.

2=Limited

Analysis and solutions minimally reflect an understanding of the student’s learning environments and their interaction with the student’s cultural, academic and linguistic backgrounds.

3=Adequate

Analysis and solutions reflect an understanding of the student’s learning environments and their interaction with the student’s cultural, academic and linguistic backgrounds.

4=Proficient

Analysis and solutions reflect a clear understanding of the student’s learning environments and their interaction with the student’s cultural, academic and linguistic backgrounds and include some support from course materials.

5=Outstanding

Analysis and solutions reflect an in-depth understanding of the student’s learning environments and their interaction with the student’s cultural, academic and linguistic backgrounds, and provide numerous relevant examples and support from course materials.

 

Criterion #3: Technology

 

Description: Students will use of technology to organize and disseminate the case study. Technology used may include (but not be limited to) weblogs, podcasts, presentation programs, websites, or movies. (AP12)

Description

1=Poor

Technology was not used to organize and disseminate the case study.

2=Limited

Technology was used minimally in the organization and dissemination of the case study.

3=Adequate

Technology was used appropriately and effectively in the organization and dissemination of the case study.

4=Proficient

Several types of technology were integrated to effectively organize and disseminate the case study.

5=Outstanding

Multiple types of technology were creatively combined to effectively organize and disseminate the case study in an engaging and polished manner.
