Urban and impoverished children experience disastrous educational and social outcomes in comparison to their mainstream counterparts. Similarly, faculty and doctoral students at minority institutions often encounter barriers that eclipse their success in the academy. LASER responds with deliberate strategies to affect systemic change in both university and urban school settings.

photo of Grace DuranAs an Education Research Analyst with the Research-to-Practice Division in the Office of Special Education Programs at the U.S. Department of Education, Dr. Grace Zamora Durán works with projects pertaining to disproportionate representation in special education, culturally/linguistically diverse populations, English Language Learners (ELLs), gender equity, assessment, and curriculum and instruction. Prior to joining the Department of Education, she worked as an Assistant Executive Director at The Council for Exceptional Children, at the local level as a central administrator, and as a special and general education teacher. Dr. Zamora Durán received her doctorate from The University of Arizona in Tucson in special education with a minor in bilingual education. In addition to the topical projects mentioned above, her interests include learning disabilities—especially among Limited-English Proficient students—second language learning/acquisition, and drop outs.
