TEXTBOOK ISSUE

UPDATE: April 11, 2008

No changes.  Summer 2008 students are advised to begin locating used text/CD copies as described below as soon as possible.

UPDATE: January 2008

The USF Textbook center has advised me that they are no longer able to purchase sufficient quantities of the textbook:

Authorware: An Introduction to Multimedia, by Simon Hooper, University of Minnesota, Published by Prentice Hall Engineering, Science & Math Copyright 1999, ISBN 0-13-096130-2 (Includes CD with Authorware 4 Working Model software)

The main problem is access to the Version 4 Working Model software. The only other source that I have been able to locate for the Version 4 Working Model software is an even older book:

Roberts, Nick. (1997). The Official Guide to Authorware 4: The Comprehensive Reference from the Multimedia Labs of Macromedia (Macromedia Press Series) (Paperback). ISBN 0-201-68899-9 (Includes CD with Authorware 4 Working Model software)

The best option for most students may be to buy a used copy of either the Hooper text or the Roberts text.  For example, both texts appear to be available through online vendors.  Additionally, there should be many USF IT alumni of the course who own copies.  I hope that a posting to the ITSA listserv (http://www.coedu.usf.edu/itsa/) might be a good way to find one, so I encourage you to do that.  Feel free to copy and paste from this message in your posting.  Be sure that the text you purchase includes the CD.

If you have access to the full version of Authorware, or are willing to purchase it, then there is less of a problem.  (Web and USF Bookstore searches indicate student price of around $500.)  Although I still advise you to purchase either the Hooper or Roberts texts (you won't be limited to making sure that yours contains the CD), most students should also be fine using other books and manuals of their choice along with the excellent "help" features within the program and online references such as http://www.authorware.com/faqmenu.asp

I will continue to explore other options and update this page appropriately.
