Note: This course was previously titled "Telecommunications in Education" -- do not take this course if you previously took the Telecommunications course. No special prerequisite skills are required for EME 6936: Internet in Education (except graduate standing, basic computer literacy, and the ability to browse the web. Each participant is expected to be a self-starter, motivated to acquire computer skills. This is an introductory course, and it can be used for teacher re-certification in any area. It is also appropriate as an elective in many Master's, Ed.S., and Ph.D. programs. If you are an Instructional Technology major, this course can be counted toward a Graduate Certificate in Instructional Technology or in the Educational Technologist track of Instructional Technology Master's degree . It will not count in the Instructional Technology Ed.S. or Ph.D. programs (although it can count as an elective in other Ed.S. and Ph.D. programs). Check with the instructor or your academic advisor if you have any questions. Back to TopThe course focuses on the applications of the Internet in education. Students will be using an Internet Service Providers (such as AOL and RoadRunner) as gateways to the Internet. Topics include: educational resources on the World Wide Web, copyright issues, webpage construction (HTML), evaluation of websites, WebQuests and other techniques for using the Internet to enhance instruction. The student will work independently, with the remote support (via email or phone communications) of the Course Instructors, to complete all course products and master all course objectives. Please notify the instructor within the first week if a reasonable accommodation for a disability is needed for this course. Back to TopYou can register for this course as a degree-seeking student or a non-degree seeking student. In other words, if you are taking the course for recertification, you might not be in a "formal" degree program. In that case, you can register as a non-degree seeking student. Visit the USF Registrar's page at http://www.registrar.usf.edu/index.php and click on "Non-Degree Student Application." If, at a later date, you decide to enter a degree program, you will be able to use some of the courses that you took as a non-degree seeker. This course is an "Alternative Calendar" course -- that means there is a bit more flexibility in registration. For example, you can register during the first week of class, without paying a late fee or completing a waiver. Your course grade will be based on the following criteria.
If you decide to drop this course, please be sure to officially withdraw -- otherwise you will receive a grade (probably an F) for the course. Remember, there is no grade forgiveness at the graduate level. No incompletes will be awarded without extenuating, documented circumstances, such as death in the family or extended illness. If you request an Incomplete for the course, the highest grade you will be able to receive will be a B, and you must finish during the following semester. This option is open only to those who can document extenuating circumstances. Back to TopThe course is conducted entirely via the Web. There are no meetings on campus, although students are welcome to come to campus for individualized assistance throughout the semester on an appointment basis. Please note that the first few activities are due in the middle of the semester. The other activities and the Final Project are due at the end of the semester.
