Social Foundations Program Area
We live in an increasingly pluralistic society. Misunderstandings, structural and unintended bias, and discrimination hamper the ability of teachers and other professionals to successfully serve their students and clients. Schools fail to educate. We lose talent. Our inability to affirm diversity in our schools, workplace, and public services adds to inequalities and injustices in the operation of central political, social and economic institutions. It contributes to social disruption, poverty, violence and civil unrest. It is a blight on our democratic heritage. It is time to do something about it. The Diversity Certificate Program is designed for teachers, other professionals and individuals concerned about these issues and who would like the opportunity to increase their own knowledge base so that they can independently contribute to adapting our institutions to accommodate the needs of all individuals and cultures. The course work addresses social class, race/ethnicity, gender, disability/exceptionality, language, and religion from the perspective of the social sciences in a four course sequence culminating with a certificate which can be
Independent,
Attached to another advanced degree in a master's or doctoral program, or
Serve as a cognate in Social Foundations for a doctoral degree in the Curriculum and Instruction doctoral degree program in the College of Education at the University of South Florida
