Course Descriptions

The following are catalog descriptions of courses in Social Foundations.  Note:   These do not list prerequisites. 

IDS 3115, Values and Choice (3 hours)

An in-depth examination of values and their relationship to choices in contemporary society using historical perspective and inquiry of moral/ethical dilemmas.

EDF 2005, Introduction to Education (3 hours)1

Introductory survey course required for admission to the College of Education. Focuses on education as a field of study and teaching as a profession. Includes lecture and field experience.

EDG 2701, Teaching Diverse Populations (3 hours)1

Introductory survey course required for admission to the College of Education. Places schools and teching within the context of the U.S. as a pluralistic society. Topics include: the demographics of diversity; prejudice; elements of culture; American heritage of diversity and its value; and barriers to cultural understanding. Includes lecture and field experience.

EDF 3604, Social Foundations of Education (3 hours)2

Social, economic and political context within which schools function and the values which provide direction for our schools; the culture as a motivating influence in instruction; and the ways in which ethnicity, race, social class, gender and language background affect access to educational and economic opportunity and achievement.

EDF 5607, Trends in the Socio-Political Foundations of U.S. Schooling (3 hours)2

Course debates the: purpose and practice of formal schooling in the U.S. with historical and sociological perspectives. Satisfies social foundations requirements for Florida teacher certification and ESL competency in knowledge of intercultural issues in education.

EDF 6517, Historical Foundations of American Education (4 hours)2

History of the origins and development of American education, events, and movements that have shaped school policies and practices, and their relationship to contemporary developments.

EDF 6520, Education in Western Civilization (4 hours)

Educational ideas, institutions, practices and prominent theorists from the western tradition and their continuing influence. (PR: Basic course in Western History or History of Philosophy.)

EDF 6531, History of Childhood, Disability, and Deviance (3 hours)3

EDF 6544, Philosophical Foundations of American Education

Major philosophies of education relevant to an understanding of contemporary education.

EDF 6606, Socio-economic Foundations of American Education (4 hours)2

Socio-economic factors as they relate to the work of professional educators and the role of public education in American society.

EDF 6705, Gender and the Educational Process (3 hours)3

Course is designed to enable public school personnel, teachers, counselors, administrators, and other professionals to identify those aspects of public education that perpetuate sex role stereotyping. Emphasis will be placed on how the law and formal and informal affirmative action activities can be employed to correct sexism in schools.

EDF 6736, Education, Communication, and Change (3 hours)3

Developments in communication as a process of social change as it affects students, teachers, and traditional school arrangements.

EDF 6765, Schools and the Future (4 hours)3

Estimates of future demans upon schools; critique of current paradigms, techniques and literature.

EDF 6810, Comparative Education (3 hours)

Comparison of contemporary educational systems of selected countries with that of the United States.

EDF 6812, Seminar in Comparative Education (4 hours)

Policies and practices in education in selected countries.

EDF 6883, Issues in Multicultural Education (4 hours)3

Lecture/discussion course, open to both majors and non-majors; address both fundamental concepts and timely issues in multicultural education and working with culturally diverse students.

EDF 7586, Classics in Educational Research (4 hours)3

Examination of the context, methods, and significance of selected research studies in education.

EDF 7649, Analysis of Educational Issues (3 hours)3

Socio-cultural, historical, and axiological examination of selected issues in public education.

EDF 7682, Education in Metropolitan Areas (4 hours)3

Modern public education and its relationship to national development.

EDF 7934, Seminar in Social Foundations of Education (4 hours)3

Significant research on socio-cultural issues in Education.
