My name is Edmund, and I live on Andros Island in the Bahamas. As you can
tell from my picture, I make baskets for a living. Andros Island is the largest
of the 700 islands in the Bahamas. However, very few people live here -- it's
mostly mud flats, forests, and beaches. I love it here, and I can find lots of
plants (like palm fronds) to make my baskets. After I make the baskets, I send
them to Nassau, which is a large city on another island.
We don't get very
many tourists on Andros Island, although fishermen like to come here. We have
some of the best fishing in the world. Divers also come to Andros to explore the
great reef and see the
coral.
Andros Island is also famous for blue holes, which are
deep pools and water caves that glow from different minerals. There
is a legend that sea monsters, called Lusca, live in the Bahamian
blue holes. Lusca are part squid, part octopus, and part shark. They
lurk in the blue holes and attack ships or swimmers. Very few people
can survive an attack from a lusca, which is why I never go near the
blue holes!
