Reality Teaching An educational adaptation of the surplus of reality teaching shows, the reality teaching workshop demonstrates how educators can effectively teach children from urban and diverse backgrounds in K-12 settings, make meaningful connections with their families, and get positive results. This full-day workshop involves faculty and children of diverse backgrounds demonstrating strategies that facilitate learning communities. The facilitators will model culturally-responsive and effective instructional, communication, and behavioral strategies for school-based stakeholders. Fifty years after Brown, we are still reconstructing education for urban children with all deliberate speed. Workshop Impact: Pre-service and inservice teachers often speak of the disconnect between their preparation programs and the actual work to be done in schools. Rarely are teachers and other school personnel shown creative and appropriate strategies for teaching urban, culturally diverse students. The reality teaching workshop demonstrates effective teaching strategies that create learning communities, increase student motivation, and raises academic achievement. Attendees will be engaged by three culturally diverse facilitators and approximately twenty children from diverse backgrounds exhibiting effective teaching and learning.
