Unit 11

Design of Things

(Chapters 4-7)

The group begins its tour. The purpose of this unit is to show how the physical environment  influences behavior.  It demonstrates that improvements in equipment design and effective use of the landscape can increase job success and enhance living conditions.

Values Clarification

Castle emerges as the most dissident visitor, asking for explanations of many Walden Two practices.  Frazier speaks on the following topics:

1. On experiments: "A constantly experimental attitude toward everything-that's all we

need." (25)

2. On dress codes: "Full dress is a form of conspicuous consumption which doesn't amuse us-except when we see it in others." (30)

3. On crowds: "But why should anyone who isn't starved for friendship or affection enjoy a

crowd?" (35)

4. On public speaking: "We solve the problem of the lecturer by dispensing with him." (36)

Indicate the order of these topics, 1st through 4th, according to their importance for you, apart from Frazier's views.  If necessary, use the page number to reread these passages.

Think about Frazier's comments.  Did they influence your ranking.  If so, how?  Then prepare a brief essay defending your ranking.

This process, values clarification, enables people to attain greater insight into their attitudes and opinions.  It also promotes understanding of their priorities among issues in modern life.
