Integrating Different Subject Areas

At the completion of a unit on accuracy, Mr. Stockard has decided that his fifth graders will go on a field trip to a bowling alley. He has designed a note to send home to parents, informed the classroom teachers and administration in writing and talked to the owner of a local bowling alley. Mr. Stockard has also contacted the bus system by phone to reserve a bus and arranged for a snack with the school lunch personnel. To deepen his students' learning experiences, Mr. Stockard has provided classroom teachers with ideas for integrating bowling scoring procedures into their math units, designed the criteria for a writing assignment about concentration, printed from the Internet a history of bowling, and set up an art project with the art teacher centered around student designed bowling T-shirts. The project has become a truly integrated experience with teachers in the different subject areas sharing their grading strategies and awarding shared grades in each of their classes.
