Caring Enough to Get Involved

Ms. Owens, a high school Social Studies teacher finds out that Sally, a 16 year old female student in her 4th period class, is engaging in behavior that she believes is indicative of an eating disorder. Friends of Sally have reported to Ms. Owens that she frequently binges and then goes to the bathroom to vomit. Ms. Owens has observed Sally visit the bathroom on several occasions for an extended period of time immediately following lunch. She has also noted that Sally made comments regarding her weight and reported using laxatives as well.

As a result of her observations, Ms. Owens seeks information regarding eating disorders. She obtains literature in order to find out more about eating disorders, their symptoms, and what she can do to help Sally. Ms. Owens calls the school psychologist to get additional information about what steps would be appropriate. Finally, Ms. Owens pulls Sally aside to speak with her individually about her concerns and lets Sally know that help is available.
