Mathematics Education

Program Plans are the advising forms that are used by graduate students and professors to organize the sequence and semesters that courses are planned to be taken by the individual student to make sure all requirements are met.   Once planned, the sequence may be changed to respond to student's  individual needs or course offerings.

The first two degrees are for individuals who are seeking initial certification. In addition to resulting in higher pay , the certificates earned through these degrees are transferable to over 30 other states.  (This is not necessarily true of state direct certification or a school based training certification program.) MAT in Middle Grades Mathematics 5-9

This program is designed for individuals without an education background who are seeking initial certification in middle grades mathematics.  Students eligible for this program:

  1. have a Bachelors degree in some field;

  2. have completed at least 18 hours of mathematics courses at the college algebra level or above;

  3. are not certified (although they may have a temporary certificate;

  4. do not have a degree in education or mathematics education; and

  5. are seeking the fastest route to a degree and certification.

Note: This option is appropriate for individuals who hold certification in elementary education  who seek certification in middle grades mathematics.

MA Plan II

This program is designed for individuals without an education background who are seeking initial certification in mathematics that covers grades 6-12.  Students eligible for this program:

     1.     have a degree in a mathematics discipline or  a closely related field;
     2.     are not certified;
     3.     do not have a degree in education or mathematics  education; and
     4.     will take 18 hours of coursework at the graduate level in the College of           
           Arts   and Sciences (CAS).  

This degree also qualifies you for teaching mathematics at the  community college level.

  The two degrees below are for individuals who already have a degree in education and who are not seeking certification though USF.

MA Plan 1

This program is designed for individuals who hold a degree in mathematics education and  are certified to teach mathematics  at the middle or high school Level.  Students eligible for this program:
    1.     have a degree in a mathematics  education or education;
   2.      are certified and are not pursuing certification through USF's Approved  

             Program; and
    3.     want to take 18 hours of coursework at the graduate level in the College of   

             Arts and Sciences (CAS).  

This degree also qualifies you for teaching mathematics at the  community college level.

This program is designed for individuals who hold a degree in mathematics education and  are certified to teach mathematics  at the middle or high school Level.  Students eligible for this program:

     3.   will take all coursework in the COE.

This program is designed for individuals who are not interested in state certification and may not be teaching in a K-12 public school setting. Most student have strong mathematics background and are only interested in teaching at the junior college level.  This plan is very similar to Plan 1.
