Scott
Wilson, M.A. is a second year doctoral student in the
Curriculum and Instruction-Urban Special Education program
at the University of South Florida. As a LASER scholar,
he is preparing to conduct research on urban issues
and prepare pre-service and in-service teachers to work
in urban schools. Mr. Wilson co-facilitates a four-part
series of professional development seminars exploring
self, diversity, ethics, and practicum and an undergraduate
and graduate seminar exploring issues and trends in
urban special education. Mr. Wilson's research interests
are culturally responsive pedagogy, classroom dynamics,
disproportionate representation of African American
learners in special education and gifted programs, student
and teacher perceptions, biological bases of human behavior,
and history and policy of special education.
Mr.
Wilson received his bachelor's degree in communication
science and disorders and his master's degree in varying
exceptionalities from the University of South Florida.
He taught at a center for students with severe emotional
disturbance in St. Petersburg, Florida for three years.
He also taught elementary and high school students with
severe emotional disorders and learning disabilities.
Further, he was the elementary team leader two years
and served on the school management team, where he co-facilitated
a 500 Role Models of Excellence program for male students
and developed a similar program, MISSES, for female
students. Mr. Wilson's goals are to work with children
and youth, families, and school districts to advance
knowledge, skills, and practice in educating and empowering
children.
