Investigating Students Attitudes Towards Reading and the Reading Process Implemented in their School

Reading is a fundamental skill necessary for students to gain access to opportunities leading to educational and economic success (Simmons & Kameenui, 1998). Two of the major predictors of referral and placement of students in special education are low reading ability and behavioral difficulties (National Research Council, 2002). Yet, historically these issues are only addressed on the surface level in special education programs (Kline, 2001; Mercer et al., 2000). African Americans consistently score below a basic level of literacy proficiency in grades 4 and 8. According to Au (1993), “….African American, Hispanic American, and disadvantaged urban eleventh graders read only slightly better than seventh graders in the nation as a whole” (p. 2). The purpose of this inquiry is to explore the perceptions and attitudes of urban students and teachers toward reading and the reading practices implemented in their schools.
