A Comprehensive Program: Promoting Positive Outcomes

The main objective of the proposed research study is to examine a community-based initiative designed to assist African American males and individuals with disabilities transitioning from correctional facilities. Although, the over-representation of African American males in correctional facilities is a well-documented phenomenon, fewer studies have examined the trends in transition and vocational education programs. The proposed project will monitor a unique experiment launched by a business establishment and designed to connect individuals leaving corrections with their community through apprenticeships, job placement, and relationships with mentors. The project will conduct 4 case studies of individuals currently participating in a Comprehensive Transition Program. All of these individuals hold various apprentice ship positions within a barbershop and hair salon. Their experiences will shed light into the linkages between community-based initiatives and increased post release options for individuals leaving corrections.
