A Qualitative Analysis of Parents’ Perceptions
Regarding their Child with a Disability Preparedness
for Transitioning to a Postsecondary Institution
Individuals with disabilities experience far less career
success than their non-disabled peers; however differences
in achievement diminish significantly for those who participate
in postsecondary education (Blackorby & Wagner, 1996).
A postsecondary degree is often seen as an equalizer
for individuals with disabilities seeking to enter and
advance in the workforce (Conway, 1999). Though the number
of postsecondary students who identify themselves as
having a disability is on the rise, from 2.6% in 1978
to 10-20% in 2002, this increase represents only a fraction
of the students who could pursue postsecondary educational
activities. Moreover, the attrition rate of students
with disabilities who do pursue postsecondary education
is high. The proposed study, A Qualitative Analysis of
Parents’ Perceptions Regarding their Child with
a Disability Preparedness for Transitioning to a Postsecondary
Institution, will seek to: (1) document parents’ experience
of transitioning their child with a disability from a
secondary school to a postsecondary institution; (2)
compare and contract deficiencies in preparation observed
by parents with issues of preparation identified in the
literature; and (3) solicit parents’ recommendations
for solutions to deficiencies in preparation encountered
in both secondary and postsecondary settings. |
