Racial/Ethnic Groups and Mean Differences in UQ:
Implications for Special Education Placements

The use of intellectual and other forms of psychological and mental tests with students who differ culturally, linguistically, or racially is subject to substantial controversy. Professionals responsible for the assessments of culturally different children frequently are uncertain which test instruments provide the most valid, relevant and equitable results. This study seeks to acquire standardization data for four intelligence tests from researchers and intelligence test publishers. The data will be analyzed to determine the mean score differences between Caucasian Americans and African Americans. Based on the observed differences, analyses will be made regarding what proportion of the African American school-age population may be impacted by mean IQ differences.
